Gynaecological Procedures

Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS)

This procedure is to check for abnormality of the endometrial cavity such as thickening of the lining, polyps, adhesions, abnormal shape of the cavity or protrusion of fibroids into the cavity.

  • Can be performed any time after Day 5 of your cycle with no vaginal bleeding at the time of the procedure unless otherwise specified by your referring doctor.
  • An empty bladder is preferable
  • A transvaginal scan to check the pelvic anatomy is done first
  • The SIS procedure involves instillation of saline (sterile salty water) into the uterus via a catheter (small tube) in the cervix and a transvaginal scan to assess the cavity of uterus and endometrium (lining).
  • You may experience some crampy period-like discomfort during the infusion of saline into the uterus. Most women tolerate the procedure well. Please let the doctor know if you are experiencing excessive discomfort.

Tubal Patency Assessment

The tubal patency assessment is to assess whether the fallopian tubes are patent or possibly blocked. On a regular gynaecological scan if the fallopian tubes are normal then they are not usually visible.

  • You should be on Day 5-10 of your cycle with no vaginal bleeding at the time of the procedure
  • An empty bladder is more comfortable for this procedure
  • A transvaginal scan is performed first to check pelvic anatomy and to exclude evidence of ovulation. If there is evidence of ovulation or significant pelvic abnormality the procedure may need to be rescheduled to another day.
  • This tubal patency study involves instillation of contrast medium (Ex Em Foam) into the uterus via a catheter (small tube) in the cervix and watching it flow through the tubes and spill around the ovaries on transvaginal ultrasound.
  • You may experience some crampy period-like discomfort during the infusion of saline into the uterus. Most women tolerate the procedure well. Please let the doctor know if you are experiencing excessive discomfort.

Heading

This procedure involves ultrasound-guided needle drainage of a cyst. Depending on the location and accessibility of the cyst, it can be performed transabdominally or transvaginally.

  • Some urine in the bladder would be helpful.
