Gynaecological Ultrasound Examinations

Transabdominal

Transabdominal scan alone is a less optimal method for imaging the pelvic organs. It is performed if a patient has not been sexually active previously. A full bladder is required for a transabdominal scan

Transvaginal

This examination is usually performed by transvaginal ultrasound. This allows us to use high frequency ultrasound in close proximity to the pelvic organs to get the best quality resolution imaging to accurately assess for abnormality. Transvaginal scan is usually more comfortable with an empty bladder.
The uterus, cervix, ovaries and adnexa (surrounding pelvic area) are assessed.
There are a number of reasons your doctor may request a gynaecological scan. The following are some of the common reasons:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Ovarian screening
  • Endometrial screening
  • Suspected endometriosis
  • Investigation of infertility
